The community life of Glade Spring is
tightly interwoven with the life of its neighboring communities
of Emory and Meadowview. That inter-relationship is perhaps most
pronounced in the educational institutions of the area, which place
a premium on educational excellence.
For the most part, children from Glade Spring attend elementary
school at Meadowview Elementary. Glade Spring Middle School is
the center for most junior high education in the region, while
most high school students attend Patrick Henry High School located
between Glade Spring and Emory.
Also in Emory is one of the most highly recognized institutions
of higher education in the South, Emory & Henry College. Founded
in 1836, Emory & Henry is also the oldest institution of higher
education in Southwest Virginia. A four-year liberal arts college,
Emory & Henry has been listed by U.S. News & World Report
as a top five regional liberal arts college in the South. The
college has been praised by independent sources for its immense
ability to challenge students to increase their abilities and
to succeed.
In his book, Colleges That Change Lives, admissions
expert Loren Pope claims that Emory & Henry does more
for its human material -- and comparatively for society -- than
do the three most selective institutions in the same state of
Virginia.
